Nick Furman is the Executive Director of the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission, and has lived in the Coos Bay area since 1970. He has been involved in the commercial fishing and seafood industries for his entire career (except for 18 months in ‘Dairyland’ in 2006-07) and is the only member of the team who does not have a law enforcement background.
Nick is a long-time local distance runner and an avid bicyclist. During the summer of 2004, he completed a ‘solo’ bicycle ride from Coos Bay, OR to Cape Cod, MA, following the Lewis & Clark Trail for many of the 4,316 miles across the United States. His wife Kathy (along with their two dogs, Cinder & Diesel) drove the ‘sag’ vehicle and kept him hydrated during the long, hot days on the road. In the process, they raised $6,500 for Coddington Place, a local domestic violence shelter and part of the Women’s Safety & Resource Center where Kathy worked at that time. They also enjoy kayaking the many bays, rivers and estuaries along the South Coast.
Being invited to be part of the ‘Coos Bay to the U.K’ team in 2006 was an honor for Nick, as is being included on the ‘Bobby-on-a-Bike 2008’ adventure from Coos Bay to VA. The only disappointment is that his wife Kathy is not able to come along this time and will be greatly missed.
